The dunes of Loon and Drunen

Would you believe that? Directly next to Tilburg, there is not only one of the biggest amusement parks of Europe – de Efteling – but there’s also the biggest desert landscape of Western Europe. Really!

The Loonse en Drunense Duinen (“The Dunes of Loon and Drunen”) are located directly to the north of Tilburg. The closest settlements are the villages Loon op Zand and Drunen which gave this location its name. It’s the biggest drifting sand landscape of Western Europe, covering around 30 square kilometres of sand. It does look a bit like dunes but then it is much bigger – and also far away from the sea. It really feels like a desert but then this is full with vegetation and trees. When my friends first told me about it I would not believe it, really … 😀

I gave this place a visit in October 2016, but I maybe only saw one of the multiple vast sand dunes there. Anyway, you get the idea if you see my pics. Amazing stuff!

This is a National Park of the Netherlands and you can access it during daylight, free of charge. From Tilburg it’s a nice short bike ride. As usual, de Loonse en Drunense Duinen have a good official website but in Dutch only … I really think they should have a look at the website of de Efteling which is not only available in Dutch, English and German, but even in Chinese! 🙂
